How To Fit A Press Fit Bottom Bracket

A press-fit bb is one that has bearings housed inside of plastic or aluminium cups that are then pressed into the bottom bracket shell of the bike. As opposed to a bearing that is housed and threaded into a frame by a spanner or tool using these notches, or cartridge bearings that are put into a frame, minus the housing cups. Have a look at your bike, as some press fit bb’s are unusual and have notches for a spanner as despite being push fit, the sides actually thread together inside of the BB shell to prevent creaking. These are 99% going to be an aftermarket product though and not come as standard on a bike. If in doubt check with your local shop. • What tools will you need? To remove the bottom bracket you need an expander plug. Then to fit them, you will need a bearing press, maybe not every home mechanic has one and there are different versions of different budgets available. • Do you have a press fit bottom bracket?
