Dr. Lera talks about Legg-Perthes disease with Max, a 12-year-old Yorkie. • Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is also known as Legg-Perthes disease, Perthes disease, coxa plana, and aseptic or avascular necrosis of the femoral head. • This condition affects the hip joint which is a ball and socket joint. The ball is at the top of the thigh bone (femur), and the socket (acetabulum) is in the pelvis. If the femoral head or ball develops necrosis or dies, it can no longer function properly. Necrosis is due to loss of the blood supply to the femoral head. Legg-Calve-Perthes occurs in young dogs and is a hereditary condition of small breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Bichon Frises, Poodles, Pomeranians, and terriers. It may also occur in cats. It is also common after trauma or injury to the leg or hip.
