Finnish pagan magic and a lot more snow

In this video I do the pet supply run I mentioned in last week's video. I also show you my sauna and talk a bit about a traditional Finnish holiday and eat some very Finnish foods. • As promised here is some more about Laskiainen and pagan traditions: • As said in the video Laskiainen has in the past been a sort of mid-winter festivity as it is believed to have been somewhere around an ancient European pagan new year and therefore the traditions include a lot of predictions and magic. • While Christmas time has usually been considered a holiday celebrating men's work like working the fields and taking care of the horses. Laskiainen has been thought to be related to women's work like taking care of cattle and handling flax, hemp, wool, turnips and beans. On Laskiainen you shouldn't work or your sheep would fall ill and snakes and storms would bother you the incoming summer. • To ensure long, soft strands of linen, the women would let their hair hang loose and brush it several times a day - the more the better. • When sledding down hills you would shout a Finnish saying (that is too difficult to even try to translate) for the flax crops to grow long, the hemp to grow beautifully and the turnips and swedes (rutabaga) to grow big. You could predict the future crops as well, the further the sled slid down the hill and the snowier the persons clothes were the longer and whiter the flax would grow. • The sauna would be heated early in the afternoon and women and men would race to see who goes first.
