Rib injuries often occur as a direct impact or forceful movement where the abdominals and rib cage are contracted. In the case of jiu-jitsu, it may be from a forceful move, knee on belly, getting caught in a body triangle, or when you were trying to lock down a triangle and cut the corner. • Rib injuries and the pain associated with them tend to come in contact with sports like wrestling, jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and Judo. There are many other ways that you can injure a rib as well but the truth is that they are not well understood in the research and are not treated like other types of injuries. This is likely because the rib cage is fixated on the thoracic spine unlike other joints of the body. • When you injure a rib, you will often hear a popping sound which can be the costal cartilage (rib cartilage) becoming injured or a fracture of the rib. This video is meant to help you understand what type of rib pain you may be having so that you can treat it properly. As a Chiropractor who treats a lot of sports injuries, I can tell you that rib injuries in BJJ tend to occur on the front cartilage region and they do often linger around. Make sure you get this treated properly so that you can ensure that you can get back on the mats as soon as possible. • Health Medical Disclaimer: Please note this video is for educational purposes and is not meant to help treat or diagnose your condition.
