Touring the Port of Gulfport

After its completion, visitors at the port will encounter no less than 12 cameras on property which will simultaneously check databases to _ • The Port of Gulfport is a 100% inspection port and it uses a variety of methods to conduct its inspections. • One of my favorite parts of the port was the water tower they built disguised as a lighthouse! It was the perfect coastal touch and I love that it has two uses! As you can hear in the video, Mr. Daniels did mention that the light on the lighthouse can be changed for different seasons or activities. • The Port of Gulfport is the 2nd largest green fruit port in the ENTIRE US! How exciting is that!? They also deal with a lot of other materials like paper and bulk fabric. • As I mentioned I learned A LOT about fruit! If you aren’t a fruit fan, go away, hahaha… just kidding, just skip this section! 😊 The port is home to a 3,000 square foot warehouse that houses 3 giant coolers set to different temperatures for the different produce. Surprisingly the green fruit (Pineapples, Bananas, and Plantains) are sometimes injected with Nitrogen to prevent the ripening process during transport. There are two different “receiving” facilities for the fruit – a dsitro facility and a ripening facility. Different markets need to get their fruit from one or the other of those based on how their fruit cycle through the store. One of my favorite facts I learned was that the bottom of the pineapple has the highest sugar content! Sssshhh… don’t tell anyone and keep them all to yourself. 😊 • The Port of Gulfport also is part of many environmental programs one of which is Green Marine. They were the 2nd port to sign up minutes after this program’s inception. The Green Marine program has many requirements that include how the port manages storm water, dust and particulates! I love that the port is invested in not only utilization of the ocean and its resources but also sustaining it! 😊 • They also utilize a wheel and stacked storage method for all cargo and things. The Wheeled system is used mainly for fruit for expedited transport. Instead of placing the fruit in the wheeled coolers than would run on a generator or gassed up in a truck, they actually plug in and run on electricity! • This is just SOME of the info I learned on the tour of the Port of Gulfport! There was so much more info!
