Summary of fetal circulation: Why fetal circulation is different from adult systemic circulation ? • Placenta : • fetal blood is oxygenated by placenta and not by lungs • 2. fetal lungs are collapsed so resistance to blood flow through the lung is much higher . So minimum amount of blood passage through lungs for oxygenation and nutrition of fetal lungs • 3. portal circulation is less significant in fetus • Changes after birth • Umbilical vein obliterates and forms ligamentum teres hepatis • 2. Umbilical arteries : proximal part is converted into superior • vesicle artery and distal part forms medial umbilical ligament • 3. Ductus venosus obliterates and forms ligamentum venosum • 4.
