5th Grade Math 28 Adjust Quotients if our Estimate is High or Low

Multiplication and division are inverse operations. They undo each other. We can use multiplication to determine if our estimate of a partial quotient is too high or too low. We multiply our estimate by the divisor, and if the product is greater than the dividend, our estimate is too high. We try multiplying the divisor by one less to adjust the quotient. We can do multiplication on scratch paper to help. If the difference is greater than or equal to the divisor, our estimate is too low and we could have fit one more divisor amount into the dividend. Remember we can check our division with multiplication and addition by multiplying the (quotient X divisor) + remainder = dividend. We do a step-by-step long division problem.
