JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA • Open for the 10pm newscast produced by Medford, Oregon's NBC station for its second subchannel carrying Cozi TV programming. KOBI is locally-owned by the Smullin family though their California Oregon Broadcasting, Inc. company. Recorded Thursday, January 25, 2024. • At the end of 2023, local Fox affiliate KMVU's owner, Imagicomm Communications, made the decision to stop carrying local news programs for an unknown reason (perhaps cost-reduction since they were paying KOBI to do their news for them?). Fox 26 had been carrying 10pm news from KOBI since 2006, with a 7am newscast added two years later. KMVU carried their last KOBI news product on December 29, 2023. That station has since replaced the 7am hour with The People's Court and 10pm half-hour with Two and a Half Men . It is unknown if this is temporary or if they're exiting the news business for good. KMVU's only other options are go in-house, which is highly unlikely, or go to KDRV (to me if they were going to outsource to KDRV they would've done that already so the transition would be seamless). Honestly they are probably done with news for good. • KOBI decided to keep the 10pm news half-hour going on their own volition, moving it to their 5.2 Cozi TV station. It remains 30 minutes in length and is largely the same format as before, just using its parent station's branding compared to the KMVU shows which had a distinct on-air look and sound. The 10pm news took a week off and debuted on Cozi on January 8th. • KOBI did discontinue the 7am hour for good though, and as far as I know, there's no plans to bring that hour over to Cozi as well. • With all this market has gone through with local news outlets in the past couple years (losing their newspaper, having their CBS affiliate close its newsroom followed by the city's oldest radio closing), it's unfortunate its Fox affiliate now decided to get rid of its news presence as well, even if was outsourced and no jobs are affected.
