But even though he held an advanced degree in physics from the University of Cambridge, he couldn't find work in his field as a minority. Instead, he became a teacher at a school in the East End of London, an experience that inspired his first novel, To Sir, With Love. • Braithwaite has long been praised for his fiction exploring race and education. His books, which derive largely from his own experience, are still relevant today.
