Low Maintenance Landscape Plants Family Plot

Part of a Landscape Design Series. To see them all: • Landscape Design • Jim Crowder from Memphis Botanic Garden talks about easy to grow, low maintenance landscape plants. He has an oak leaf holly. It is an easy plant to grow. It grows in a conical shape and requires only a little trimming. It also is one of the few hollies that produces male and female flowers for berries with only one plant. Another plant he recommends is abelia. It used to be that abelia were long and leggy and not too pretty. Now there are many newer cultivars that are much more attractive. They are available in several different colors and bloom through most of the summer. Abelia also attracts bees. Another plant Jim recommends is the Yaupon Holly. It is a good foundation plant. It can get up to 5-6 feet tall if you let it go but it will take a long time to get there. There are many different shapes and kinds of Yaupon Holly to choose from. Nandina is another low maintenance plant. It is another classic plant that used to grow tall and leggy but new varieties are much prettier and some are very short. There are hundreds of options in many different colors. There are no insects or diseases that affect the nandina in the Mid-South. A plant many people don’t think of for a landscape plant is the blueberry. They only need to be trimmed about one a year and bear fruit. They also can have deep red foliage if planted in full sun. Many landscape plants do not like wet heavy soils. If you have that kind of soil make sure you do not plant your plant too deep, container deep at most.
