K2 • K2, at 8,611 metres above sea level, is the second-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest. It lies in the Karakoram range, in part in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. • K2, the second highest peak in the world (28,611 feet), is much more difficult to climb than Mount Everest (29,035 feet). While over 1,000 people have reached the summit of Everest, and 380 climbers have summitted K2. In terms of risk, there is an 18 percent summit to death ratio on Everest. • First surveyed as part of the British Survey of India back in 1856, it was named K2 as it is found in the Karakoram Range to the northeast of the Himalayas on the Pakistan-China border.
