Injections are the most important and crucial part of the IVF journey. Unless we give injections, the number of eggs won't increase. • Why do we give injections? To increase all the follicles that are already present, to make them mature, and to prepare the body for transferring the embryo again. These are called stimulation injections, which include FSH, LH, and HMG. The dosage to be given is decided based on the woman's age, weight, ovarian reserve, and the number of follicles present that month. This process leads to the production of more eggs, increasing the chances of success. • How do we give these injections? Usually, they are given under the skin, but sometimes they are given in the muscle as well. A very small needle, typically an insulin syringe, is used, making it as painful as an ant bite. If you're worried about the pain, there's no need to fret. The entire process will take 9 to 12 days, and on the final day, a trigger injection is given. This occurs when the maximum follicle reaches 17 mm, ensuring the eggs in the follicles are mature and ready for fertilization when collected. • When it comes to injections, it's natural to feel scared. Common side effects include mood swings, headaches, and bloating for the first 3 to 4 days. In some cases, those with water sacs may experience hyperstimulation (OHSS), where the follicles become very large, leading to severe bloating and water accumulation in the stomach. However, this occurs in only about 1 to 2% of patients, so there's no need to worry too much. • Remember, the injections will only be a little painful. If you experience a headache or bloating, these symptoms will typically reduce within 2 to 3 days. Keep this in mind and approach IVF injections with a positive attitude.
