Greyhounds In Retirement 1960

M/Ss of the greyhound track at West Ham Stadium, London, as the hare zips by, the dog gates are lifted and six greyhounds run out; some men in white coats and bowler hats run to meet their greyhounds at the end of the race, put leads on them and take them off the track. • • Commentator talks of the difficulty these dogs, bred for speed, can have in adapting when their careers are over. Two of the dog handlers put their greyhounds into the back of a van; a moustachioed man in tweed, Sidney Hicks, closes the doors and drives off; the sign on side of the van says 'Hendon and Aldenham Kennels Ltd'. These dogs have apparently just retired! • • M/S of a sign reading 'B.U.A.V. Dog Rescue Kennels / (The Derek Roy Homefinding Scheme For Greyhounds!) / 47 Whitehall, SW1 [head office] / Patron... His Serene Highness Prince Rainier of Monaco', as commentator says ...at this reception centre at Edgware in Middlesex, they undergo a period of detraining to rid them of hitherto instinctive habits of chasing and savaging small furry creatures . An English sheepdog and Pekinese are waiting in the garden; the new arrivals are led by Sidney and his wife, Leslie, and are allowed to run about the garden and mix with the other dogs. • • C/U of a greyhound's head as Sidney puts a muzzle on a greyhound; C/U of Sidney's daughter, Sandra, with a toy rabbit hidden in her coat. She then throws the rabbit to the ground and runs about and pulls the toy around on a piece of string, while the dog barks fiercely and leaps at it; he's on a lead that Sidney is holding. Cut to C/U of Stanley with another dog who has evidently completed his de-rabbit attack training and is not much interested in the toy held before him. Sidney leads him away from the toy; the dog strains to look back at it. Brief M/S of Randolph Wren (Secretary of BUAV Dog Rescue) and Dorothy Sanderson bounding across a field leading several greyhounds. • Note: interesting letter on file from Randolph Wren mentions volunteers at Bradford and Thirsk markets bought dogs destined for laboratories on behalf of the Society, that were sent to these kennels to be re-homed. Pathe crossed through this part - a bit subversive, obviously! Cuts exist - see separate record. • FILM ID:117.12 • A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
