Bothwell is a charming historic town on the banks of the River Clyde. It is on the Lake Highway in the Central Highlands and is on the shortest route between Devonport Hobart. Shortest, but definitely not the flattest nor straightest. We drove to Bothwell via this route with a caravan in tow and if you are mindful of your car's capabilities it was not a hard drive. • The Mairremmener Aborigines occupied this area prior to the Europeans. • The first European to cross the district was Lieutenant Thomas Laycock in 1807 and it was subsequently settled by a boatload of Scottish pioneers in 1822. It was named by Gov. Arthur after Bothwell in Scotland, which, coincidentally, is on the banks of the River Clyde. • The town has an amazing array of heritage buildings and a beautiful vista. During winter it would also be fringed by snow capped mountains. We followed the ‘Walk around Bothwell’ brochure available at the visitor centre. It is a charming and easy walk with such a vast array of heritage listed buildings and buildings of interest. • Bothwell is the birthplace of golf in Australia. Scottish immigrant, Alexander Reid, played golf on his new property back in the 1820s. He called his property ‘Ratho’ after the village he came from. It is still played to this day at “Ratho” on the edge of town. • Today, the greens are still fenced and there are sheep grazing the fairways. You can try your hand at the 18 holes. BYO Clubs or hire some on site. What strikes me is the square greens. • The visitor centre is well worth the visit. It is large, has a lovely gift shop, a historical display, as well as the Australasian Golf Museum. Bothwell even has its own tartan. • The surrounding farmland is predominantly sheep and beef cattle. But there is a variety of crops beginning to emerge, such as tulips, cereal grain, poppies, pyrethrum strawberries. • We stayed at the council-run Bothwell Caravan Park. It is right in town behind the visitor centre. You pull in, find a spot and then pay at the council or the garage. It was comfortable, quiet and reasonably priced for a power water site with toilets, showers, dump point and rubbish bins. • YouTube @jabindajoey LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, hit the bell to GET NOTIFIED • Follow us on our wonderful journey around Australia, our homeland • Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/giulio-fazio/ama...
