Debbie Fleming Caffery, a native of the Bayou Teche in southwest Louisiana, continues to reside in the area. Her early career was greatly influenced by Dorothea Lange and other artists of the FSA and Federal Arts Project of the WPA during the Depression. Like these pioneers, she aims to tell stories through her photographs, but her work stands out for its blend of artful composition and documentary realism. Her striking, dramatic prints reflect her deep connections with the people and places she photographs, embodying her profound respect for her subjects. • https://www.debbieflemingcaffery.com • Since the late 1970s, Caffery has documented the sugarcane industry and its community in Louisiana. Her work also extends to rural villages in Mexico, where she has found parallels to the communities of her Louisiana upbringing. In 2005, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for her photographs of women working in Mexican brothels. The following year, she received the Katrina Media Fellowship from the Open Society Foundations to capture the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. • Caffery was recently commissioned by the High Museum in Atlanta for their Picturing the South photography initiative. Her published monographs include Carry Me Home (Smithsonian, 1990), The Shadows (Twin Palms Press, 2002), Polly (Twin Palms Press, 2004), The Spirit The Flesh (Radius Books, 2009), and Alphabet (Fall Line Press, 2015).
