Endoplasmic Reticulum: • • (I break my article into five main headings for simplicity and to understand easily. These are Discovery, Definition, Composition, Structure and Function). • • √ Discovery of Endoplasmic Reticulum: • Endoplasmic Reticulum was first reported by a biologist, Porter, in 1945. • • √ Definition of Endoplasmic Reticulum: • • Endo - Inside • Plasmic - Cytoplasm • Reticulum – Network • • Endoplasmic Reticulum is a network of channels (tubes) inside the cytoplasm starting from the nuclear membrane and spreading toward the cell membrane . • • √ Main points about Endoplasmic Reticulum: • • ER is bounded by a single membrane which is called Cisternae. The main function of Cisternae is to separate the inside chemicals of the Endoplasmic Reticulum from the outside chemicals of the cytoplasm. • • ER is only present in Eukaryotic cells. • • Endoplasmic reticulum is present in both plant and animal cells. • • √ Composition of Endoplasmic Reticulum: • Endoplasmic Reticulum is made up of Proteins and Lipids. • • √ Structure of Endoplasmic Reticulum: • Endoplasmic Reticulum exists in two morphological forms: • i) Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER): • • RER gives a rough appearance due to the attachment of a Ribosome (small granular organelle). The tubes of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum are smaller in diameter. RER helps in protein synthesis. • ii) Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) • SER gives a smooth appearance due to the absence of a ribosome. The tubes of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum are larger in diameter. SER helps in lipid synthesis. • • Some more functions of SER: • i) They help in detoxification (removal of harmful substances from cells) mainly in the liver cells. • ii) They also store calcium ions mainly in muscle cells. • iii) They are involved in the transport of impulses mainly in nerve cells. • • √ Overall Functions of Endoplasmic Reticulum: • 1. Help in Protein synthesis • 2. Help in lipids metabolism. • 3. Help in the transport of materials. • 4. Help in detoxification store calcium ions. • 5. It also helps in the transport of impulses. • • • 👉 Cell Structure and Function Complete Chapter: • https://bit.ly/40Ubc4l • 👉 Tricks and Mnemonics: • https://bit.ly/43yzser • #edoplasmicreticulum • #SER • #RER • J Biology - Instructor Jawad Ahmad • • Difference Between Cytoplasm, Nucleoplasm, Protoplasm and Protoplast: •    • Difference among Cytoplasm, Protoplas...   • Cell Wall: •    • Cell wall structure and function | co...
