The Sonatine for flute and piano was written in 1935 and was originally published in 1937 by Fiironer/Oertel in Berlin. The work was out of print • for many years until republished in 1996 by Schott. Gieseking apparently had a great love for the flute and even took a few lessons on it. Before long he was performing the Sonatine in Wiesbaden and elsewhere with the flautist Franz Danneberg and later recorded it in Berlin with Gustav Scheck who had recently been appointed Professor of Flute at that city’s Hochschule für Musik. This three-movement work is a duo, with flute and piano parts of equal interest. The melodic first movement, Moderato, is tonal with a lyrical theme which is repeated often with many unexpected shifts of key. This movement is characteristic of the French style of Faure. The second movement, marked Allegretto, is in 6/8 and has a charming, pastoral, lilting quality. The Vivace third movement, a bit reminiscent of Rachmaninov, is quite difficult and energetic for both instruments, yet has some beautiful lyrical moments. • (Naxos Music Library) • Please take note that the audio AND sheet music ARE NOT mine.
