Polyol pathway is the metabolism of excess glucose into sorbitol. Sorbitol is a monosaccharide having all six carbon alcohol group (polyol). Sorbitol pathway (polyol pathway) partly explains the microvascular complications seen in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients.
