Beaufort County News presents today's headlines! Presented by Matt Goldin • https://www.beaufortcountysc.gov/news/ • https://www.beaufortcountysc.gov/bctv/ • ***STORY 1**** • On August 20, 2024, Assistant City Manager JJ Sauvé presented an in-depth update on the City of Beaufort’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) during a quarterly work session with the City Council. (p. 24) The presentation provided a detailed overview of the current state of the CIP, highlighted the progress made in key projects, and introduced significant improvements in internal processes and public engagement strategies. • • Key Takeaways from the CIP Quarterly Report • • 1. Formation of the CIP Team • • In February 2024, the City of Beaufort established a dedicated CIP Team to enhance project coordination and information sharing. The team, composed of key city officials from various departments, meets weekly to discuss ongoing projects, address concerns, and ensure that all team members are aligned with the city’s strategic goals. The team’s formation is part of a broader initiative to streamline processes and adopt Key Performance Indicators across all departments. • • 2. Process Improvements and Best Practices • • The CIP Team has initiated several critical internal process improvements, focusing on consistency, transparency, and efficiency. Notable advancements include the development of a Project Management Standard Operating Procedure, the creation of a shared access records management system, and the adoption of a new Project Management System integrated with Geographic Information Systems. These efforts aim to align the City’s project management practices with industry best practices and legal requirements, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of the CIP. • • ***STORY 2***** • • As part of its continued efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding alcohol and substance misuse, Beaufort County has announced that the department providing treatment services and programs has rebranded into Nexus Care of Beaufort County. • • “The rebrand of the department is a monumental event not only for Beaufort County Government, but for our community members as well. The new logo aligns perfectly with the mission of the department, and I am so grateful to be part of such an important change,” said Audra Antonacci-Ogden, Assistant County Administrator of Community Services. • • Since its beginning in 1974, the department has helped families, individuals, and the community overcome addiction and substance misuse. For some, these programs and services are a requirement of the law, for others the programs are a requirement for life. The department’s mission is to reduce the negative impact of alcohol and drugs in Beaufort County by providing its citizens with person-centered prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery services. • • **STORY 3*** • A favorite burger and beer joint in Port Royal closed the doors on Saturday — and in its place the town is gaining an Italian restaurant. Fat Patties was known for its casual vibe and trivia nights with many of its customers being Marines from the local base. Located at 831 Parris Island Gateway, just 2.3 miles north of U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, new Marines were treated to free meals on Fridays, the day MCRD holds its graduations. Owner Nick Borreggine cited three reasons for closing Fat Patties, which opened 12 years ago. One reason was inflation, which Borreggine said “was not really kind to a burger joint.” “My expenses were exceeding burger prices,” Borreggine said. • Borreggine also owns Shellring Ale Works on 11th Street in Port Royal overlooking Battery Creek. Owning two casual restaurants that were favorites with beer lovers meant “we are competing with ourselves,” said Borreggine, citing a second reason. “Between Shellring and Fat Patties,” Borreggine said, “we kind of had the same customers.” Borreggine, who also owns Alvin Ord’s Sandwich Shop on Port Royal’s Ribaut Road, says he also wants to diversify the company, Salt Marsh Brewing. Toward that end, an Italian restaurant called Scratch Italian Kitchen will open in the Fat Patties location. There’s a need, Borreggine says, for an Italian restaurant north of the Broader River. • The new restaurant, which also will be casual, will be open in 4 to 6 weeks if all goes as planned, Borreggine said. Pasta that can be cooked at home also will be available for purchase at the restaurant.
