Abandoned by her family for her embrace of Catholicism (including by her Catholic father), Elizabeth Prout resolved to spend her life caring for those similarly abandoned: by society, by family, by employers, by everyone. She cared for the poor in the various epicenters of the Industrial Revolution, particularly the hard scrabble city of Manchester and it's infamous to this day slum of Angel Meadow.
