Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid (OCP) is a subtype of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid (MMP) and is an autoimmune condition affecting the eyes. It leads to conjunctivitis and scarring (cicatrization) of the conjunctiva, which can result in blindness if not treated. The underlying cause of OCP is believed to be a Type II hypersensitivity reaction, where autoantibodies attack cell surface antigens in the basement membrane of the conjunctival epithelium. Autoantigens like BP230 and BP180, associated with bullous pemphigoid, have been investigated in relation to OCP. However, the beta-4 subunit of the alpha-6 beta-4 integrin in hemidesmosomes is now considered more likely to be the target antigen. Additionally, certain HLA types, particularly HLA-DR4 and the HLA-DQB1*0301 allele, have been linked to an increased susceptibility to OCP, with the latter thought to bind to the beta-4 subunit of the alpha-6 beta-4 integrin, implicating it further in the disease's pathogenesis. • This video was recorded by Smart Eye Camera. • https://ouiinc.jp/en/
