Pediatric Surgeon John K. Petty, MD explains the importance of having a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in your community. • https://www.brennerchildrens.org/Pedi... • TRANSCRIPT: A Level I Pediatric Trauma Center really represents the highest level of commitment that a group of people can make to children. Trauma is the leading cause of death in children- it kills more children every year than all other causes combined. So it matters. It matters how you think about injured children. It matters what you do for them. • There are a lot of different components that go into that and it really means that from every point of injury- from the scene, to pre-hospital transport, to sometimes referring institutions, to the Emergency Department, the operating rooms, the ICU, the wards, hospital discharge and beyond- every piece of that is part of the trauma center. And the recognition of the Level I commitment means that every piece of that has been committed to being successful and to doing the best that it can. • And then putting it all together as a whole so there is a continuity from the scene of injury to the definitive care and on into rehab. • It really represents the hearts of the people who are here, to make trauma a priority, to do it right. Because the impact is huge. The consequences of child injury both for life and death but also for long term effects from injury that affect the child for the rest of his or her life are of huge consequence. • So the commitment really is to every component of that both from the very beginning on into that child's future to do the best that we can.
