This being the case, we find that chapter 8 and 9 are very close together in time. • Daniel had been studying the book of Jeremiah, and understood from the study of it that God was going to leave the Jews in captivity 70 years, then punish Babylon for their iniquity. (Jeremiah 29:10, 14; 25:11-13) But he also understood from prophecy, that it was going to be the Medes and Persians that would destroy Babylon and avenge the destruction of the temple (Jeremiah 51:11) also that they would ultimately be the ones to let the Jews return to their homeland and restore their worship in the temple.
