One day, after signs of seismic activity were recorded on Dante's Peak, the service sent him on a routine monitoring mission, as the volcano was reputed to have been extinct for centuries. Dr. Dalton arrives at Dante's Peak, a small town located at the foot of the volcano. After the discovery of two young men scalded and asphyxiated while swimming in a hot spring on the slopes of the volcano, the service was forced to send a full team to conduct increased surveillance and a series of in-depth measurements. The accumulation of clues showing an imminent awakening of the volcano leads the authorities to consider evacuating the small town in peace.
