However, according to the Meriam-Webster Dictionary, the term means moderation in action, thought, feeling and indulgence of appetites, alcohol and passions. The Greek word is ‘egkrateia’ which is also translated as ‘self-control’ in other versions of Scripture. Thayer’s definition of ‘self-control’ is “the virtue of one who masters the flesh with its passions and desires.” The flesh, also known as the carnal, sinful nature we inherited from Adam, is at the root to the problem. Many Scriptures show that YAHWEH requires us not merely to control the desires of the flesh but to put the fleshly nature to death. Failure to do so will result in the second death, otherwise called eternal damnation/punishment in Hell. We need the Holy Spirit to empower/enable us to crucify the flesh. • Search the scriptures that we refer to for yourselves and more to learn the ways of YAHWEH and what He expects from us.
