Want to try this… • Here Penland teaching artist Mark Melonas of Lukeworks (https://lukeworks.com/index.html) is pulling plaster, which is then cut apart to create a mold for a unique, scalloped edge. • Concrete artisan Mark Melonas worked closely with designer Ariana Grieu and designer client @theplantstylist to figure out the size and spacing of the scallop and the softness of the bowl, with gorgeous results. • A FEW QUESTIONS FOR MARK, THE CONCRETE EXPERT: • What got you started working in concrete and what has kept you going? • I used concrete during my time in graduate school. I love the mold making and casting process, and I enjoy the language of concrete. • I think that I keep going because concrete is challenging and I keep discovering new processes and approaches. I find it very humbling in that it requires me to be skilled in many material processes. • • Can you share an unexpected fact about working in concrete? • Concrete is much easier to pour when it is cold! Adding Ice to your mix water is one of the simplest ways to get better pours. • • TEACHING THIS SPRING • A few lucky students will spend 8 WEEKS with Mark this spring in the Penland wood studio, learning to work with concrete. • We can’t wait to benefit from Mark’s extensive experience and research. • Registration opens October 15. • https://penland.org/workshops/wood/ • • #moldmakingandcasting #moldmakersofinstagram #zink #sink #concretezink #concretesink #beton
