Went for a walk, today, and found a young rosette of Great Mullein ( Verbascum thapsus ) growing on my path. It was lucky to escape the lawnmower, and will now be preserved and watered for it's beautiful yellow flower-spike. • • These Great Mullein leaves have traditionally been used as toilet paper. Of the various leaves that have, throughout history, been used as toilet paper, Mullein would have to be the Rolls Royce, as it were. • • I am sure, in the Garden of Eden, that Adam and Evan would've availed themselves of soft, downy Mullein leaves when nature called. • • Apparently, according to Wiki, they are native to Europe, northern Africa and Asia. Now, of course, introduced in the Americas and Australia. It's called Cowboy Toilet Paper in the western United States. But resourceful people would've used these leaves for personal hygiene for millennia. • • In the olden days, of Britain, and Europe, they would be deliberately planted outside lavatories--so that people could avail themselves of the soft, fluffy felt-like leaves. Just like a lamb's ear. Indeed, there is another plant called Lamb's Ear with lovely downy leaves, too, but they may be a little too small to use, 'ceptin on babies. • • Here is the Wikipedia link for more information about Great Mullein: • • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbascu... • • Here is the Wikipedia link for more information about Lamb's Ear: • • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stachys_... • • • .....
