Is CH3CH2CH2OH (1-Propanol) soluble or insoluble in water? The answer is that 1-Propanol (also called n-Propanol) is soluble in water. It is polar compound which readily dissolves in water. • For alcohols, like 1-Propanolwe have a small polar molecule. Since water is also polar the CH3CH2CH2OH will be attracted to, and surrounded by, water molecules. For this reason 1-Propanol molecules will spread out in the water (dissolve) and form a homogeneous solution. • For alcohols with longer chains of carbon atoms, like CH3(CH3CH2CH2OH )9OH (Decanol) much of the molecule is nonpolar (or only very slightly polar) and the molecule will therefore be insoluble in water. But for CH3CH2CH2OH , which only has one Carbon, this is not the case and it will be soluble in water. For a list of solubility of alcohols, see https://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genche... • • For ionic compounds, unlike 1-Propanol, we can use these basic rules for solubility (see    • Solubility Rules:  Explanation   Prac...  ): • Salts of: • Group I elements (Li+, Na+, K+, Cs+, Rb+) are • NH4+ (Ammonium ion) are soluble. • the nitrate ion (NO3-) are generally soluble. • of Cl-, Br-, and I- are soluble. Exceptions Ag+, Pb2+, and (Hg2)2+ • most sulfates are soluble. Exceptions: Ba2+, Ca2+, Pb2+, Ag+, Sr2+ • most hydroxide salts are only slightly soluble. Exceptions: NH4+, Li+, Na+, K+ • most carbonates (CO32-) are insoluble. Exceptions: Group 1 and NH4+ • Note: Rules at the top supersede any lower rules.
