If you are considering adopting one of these dogs there are some things you need to know. Here is a simple list of 7 things you should know before adopting a Cockapoo dog. • First let’s talk about their history. The Cockapoo is the result of breeding the Cocker Spaniel with the Poodle. In most cases it is the toy poodle therefore these are smaller dogs usually weigh about 20 pounds with a life expectancy of 13 to 17 years. • Second, Cockapoos first began to appear in the United States during the 1950’s. They were marketed as a small family dog perfect for those moving to the newly developed suburbs. Young families with small children quickly fell in love with this dog. • Third, The Cockapoo does not meet the American Kennel Club’s criteria for recognition because it is not a pure breed dog. This is why you never see them competing in prestigious dog shows as those entries must be of a pure breed. • Fourth, These dogs have lots of thick fur and rarely ever shed. Therefore routinely grooming is a must or you will have a dog whose fur covers its eyes limiting their vision. Without proper grooming it won’t take long before your Cockapoo looks like a giant ball of fur. • Fifth, Cockapoos are prone to ear infections. This is because they have long droopy ears and the fur behind the ear quickly thickens. If that area gets wet it does not dry easily leaving the ear at risk for infection. Proper ear grooming is a must. • Sixth, Cockapoos are happy and playful dogs. They love children and love attention. They are easy going and get along with other dogs and cats. However, they do not like to be left alone and may develop separation anxiety. Realize they are a social dog and happiest when spending time with their family. • Sixth, Cockapoos come in many different colors. There is no dominant fur color for this dog. Some will have a mixed color of fur and others will be a solid color. Many times you will see a Cockapoo with a white chest fur but not always. • Seventh, Cockapoos have lots of energy. They love to run, dig, climb and yes go for walks. They love to lie on the floor on their belly when relaxing. They still need to unleash their daily amount of energy. • There you have it, 7 characteristics associated with the Cockapoo.
