In this movement the viola plays in Dorian mode • (except for the very last note, where it reverts to the octatonic mode of the other three instruments, • resulting in a fine resolution). • The result is a fascinating polymodal structure and creates harmonies of great mystery. • It is, however, a tonal piece because it has an obvious tonal centre, which is the first note that the viola plays. • It was performed by the Camerata quartet in Manchester, UK, in 1997. • The photographs are of chainsaw carvings by Tim Burgess in the Sale and Timperley area.
