When a substance is heated, its constituent particles begin moving and become active thus maintaining a greater average separation. Most objects stretch when they are heated and shrink when cooled down. But there are also some exceptions, which stretch when they are cooled down in a certain temperature range and they shrink when they are heated; for example: water between 0°C and 4°C or iron - platinum alloy. Metal stick stretches most in length while warming. As extension is so small that it is hardly noticed. We can help us with a pointer on a free edge of a stick. The other edge of a stick is fixed, so that while heating the stick stretches towards the pointer and slowly moves it.
