Ravenna is a city located around one hour from Bologna in north Italy. This place has always been on my bucket list ever since I was in high school, since the Basilica of San Vitale is located here. What's so special about this basilica? It was built in 547 and is a very important monument featuring the mosaics of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and his empress (who became a co-ruler and was instrumental in keeping him in power), Theodora. These mosaics are just really spectacular, there are no words to describe them. I wonder how they can survive all the way until now. Other than San Vitale, the city has many other early Christian monuments that are decorated with beautiful mosaics. Ravenna is also interesting because you can also enjoy buildings from the Medieval and Renaissance era. There are even Baroque frescoes, including in San Vitale.
