Hello everyone. Today we are going to conduct a beautiful experiment which is called the Chemical flower. • For this experiment, we will need to prepare the indicator solution in advance. • To do this, I took about 30 ml of isopropanol and added to it about five hundredths of a gram of bromothymol blue indicator and one-tenth of a gram of phenolphthalein. • After that I’ve added as well approximately 3 drops of ethanol to the mixture. • Now let’s pour the resulting indicator mixture into a petri dish. • And for our experiment, we will also need a metallic sodium. • Sodium is an active alkali metal. So take a small piece of sodium and cut it into smaller pieces. • And now let’s proceed to the reaction itself, take the small pieces of sodium and throw them into the petri dish with our indicator solution. • After this we can observe a very nice effect - Sodium reacts with a mixture of isopropanol and ethanol, thereby forming the alkaline environment. • Alkali changes the acidity of the environment, and the indicator responds to changes in acidity and colors, blending in blue and purple. • Bromothymol blue is colored in blue, and phenolphthalein in crimson. Since isopropanol has a high viscosity you can observe an interesting effect of a slow diffusion of alkali. • In this case, we can see a very beautiful effect of a flower formation. • I’ve conducted this experiment several times with slightly varying proportions of ethanol and isopropanol. • Here I’ve added more ethanol. • And for this mixture I’ve opted for a slightly different components. I took a bit of kerosene and ethanol but the experiment turned out to be not so spectacular as we would want. • Nevertheless, I think the first mixture behaved most beautifully.
