The New York Central's Niagara steam locomotive has been described as the ultimate steam locomotive . It's been touted as one of the most efficient and successful steam locomotives in North America. It was a 4-8-4 built with some of the most modern technology of the time. With power and speed on its side, the Niagara's were set to be a master class of steam locomotive design. However, being built just after the second World War would already mark their demise, and set in stone their short service life.
