Viral hepatitis is a significant and costly public health problem in California. Chronic viral hepatitis infection is the most common reason for liver transplantation and the leading cause of liver cancer in the United States. More than 18,000 Americans die every year as a result of complications from chronic viral hepatitis infection. In fact, the annual number of deaths related to viral hepatitis now exceeds deaths related to HIV. The financial burden of hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection in California is also substantial. In 2010, hospitalization charges for hepatitis B and hepatitis C-related admissions reached more than 2.3 billion dollars. • Many people with viral hepatitis are unaware of their infection because they do not feel sick or have symptoms of disease. This makes it important to test persons at risk for viral hepatitis so they can be assessed for treatment before they develop advanced liver disease. Testing also allows infected persons to take simple steps to care for their liver, like getting vaccinated against hepatitis A, cutting down on their alcohol use, and being linked to care. Knowing ones status is also important for preventing transmission of viral hepatitis to friends and family members. • For more information on getting tested, visit: www.calhep.org • For more information about hepatitis, visit: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/Pages...
