In tennis we mostly think about hitting the ball and that is what gets us in trouble at the net. The key to effective volleying is changing the mentality from hitting to catching. Volleying is really more of a reception skill. The key to good volleying is to set up the racquet head behind the incoming ball as you would set up your hand to catch. If the ball is coming high the racquet head should be high if the incoming ball is low, set the racquet head low. The legs are used to adjust and the racquet just presses the ball at contact with very little motion.
