Thank you to our Instagram follower for asking this tip request question: How should I ask when requesting a reference/letter of recommendation? • As soon as you identify a PT, professor, or supervisor/coworker as someone you would like to have write your LOR you should ask them what you need to do to secure a strong letter from them. Please don’t assume that they are automatically going to write you a strong LOR. Having this type of professional conversation will increase your likelihood of success when it comes to obtaining a LOR that will actually be an asset to your application. • Your reference's response to this question will dictate what you need to do to secure a strong letter. You may need to meet with them periodically, have an interview, or share an updated resume. They may ask you to help them with a research or work project. Regardless of what the request is, setting this professional expectation is crucial. • Now it can feel a bit awkward to just randomly walk up to your desired reference and just ask them for a strong LOR, so you should probably ask to speak to them briefly in private about your future physical therapy school application. It may also be a good idea to warm them up a bit by listing some specific things you are grateful for about your time together with that person. It could be that they have taken the time to answer your questions, get to know you as a person, or give you more hands on learning opportunities. Regardless, start with some gratitude to get the ball rolling. • We call this method the gratitude/expectations sandwich! • Express gratitude, then set expectations (which includes asking them what you need to do to secure a strong LOR from them), let them know you will be sending them an updated copy of your resume and what we call a brag sheet which is a list of highlights about activities that you have done, or assignments completed that were exceptional during your time working with that person, and express gratitude again. • Afterwards sharing a thank you note that has a small token of gratitude or a gift card is also a good idea. • If you have pre-PT questions like this one, comment down below, or follow us on Instagram @PTAPPCO to submit a question via our story on tip request Tuesday! • Link to our upcoming free masterclass: https://linktr.ee/ptappco • Follow us on Instagram: / ptappco • To inquire about our coaching products feel free to shoot us an email to: [email protected] • If you are interested in application coaching, you can feel free to check out my coaching products by clicking here: https://physicaltherapyapplicationcoa... • To download the free Application Check-up and What-if Calculator click here: https://physical-therapy-application-... • To download our Top 50 Recommended DPT Programs List click here: https://physical-therapy-application-... • To download our Cheapest DPT Programs in the United States List click here: physical-therapy-application-coach.teachable.com/p/my-downloadable-316213 • If you want to keep up with my current content be sure to subscribe to my channel, like this video, and click here to subscribe to my free bi-monthly email list: https://physicaltherapyapplicationcoa...
