In the vast expanse of the cosmos, a celestial object known as Apophis, a potentially hazardous asteroid, is making its way towards us. This asteroid, with a diameter of about 1,100 feet, will make a close pass to Earth on the 13th of April, 2029. Fear not, for NASA's OSIRIS-Apophis Explorer or OSIRIS-APEX is on the case. Having successfully delivered a sample from the Bennu asteroid in 2023, OSIRIS-APEX is now en route to study Apophis. The goal? To understand any potential alterations to Apophis' trajectory caused by the close pass in 2029. This knowledge could be valuable in the future when Apophis or other asteroids pose a threat. So, is Earth safe in 2029? For now, it seems so. But only time and the diligent work of our space agencies will tell.
