Kapiti Miniature Railway Spreading Joy Since 1980

We missed a video last week - blame Jet Lag! We just got back from a trip to New Zealand. • Whilst we were there, we took a trip to Raumati Marine Gardens - https://maps.app.goo.gl/vtAvPBRPaaade... - wherein there is a Model Railroad Club that has existed since 1980; the Kapiti Miniature Railway. Not an HO or N scale club like many might think, KMR operates 5 inch and 7¼ inch gauge, rideable model trains. • If you ever find yourself in the area, they operate every Sunday (weather permitting) - year round. Rides are affordable and go toward the maintenance of the facilities. More information can be found at their website: https://www.kapitirail.org.nz/ or on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... • It all started as a simple loop around the building. Trains would leave the station, do two circuits, and stop again to let riders off and on. Over the latter decades the loop has grown to include some over/under, two tunnels, and the full circuit is about a kilometer long - sources are mixed as to whether it is just under or just over - I couldn't find an exact figure. The ride typically takes about 7 minutes. • Visible in the video but not highlighted, the club has invested in some electronics. The points/switches can all (or at least mostly) be thrown remotely by an engineer as they approach. The most common ones are behind the station where trains will choose to either come to the platform or proceed around the long loop, and right before the station area where the platform track is selected. The system will detect the train approaching and show a ready light, the engineer will press the button for their desired route and either receive it immediately, or have to wait until the junction area is clear. Finally, exit from the station is similarly lit with an overhead bar indicating which track has the route out and whether it is safe to begin the journey. • Again, thanks to the team at KMR who welcomed 2Railz into their workshop (not shared here) and to the upper deck of the beautiful clubrooms. We certainly hope to return again before too long! • ===================================== • 2Railz equipment: • Field Recording: • Canon GX10 (Camera) -- https://bhpho.to/3vlvlBD • Panasonic HC-VX1 (Camera) - https://a.co/d/46pB12B • Zoom H6 (Audio Recording) -- https://amzn.to/3B4kQUF • Tentacle Sync -- https://bhpho.to/3paLWqI • DJI Osmo Action (Action Camera) -- https://amzn.to/3vlXTLk • Tripod -- https://amzn.to/3lNcEU9 • Whistler WS1010 (Radio Scanner) -- https://amzn.to/3lZgPMZ • Studio: • Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO (Video mixer) -- https://amzn.to/3DPb7mM • Zoom Livetrak L-8 (Audio mixer) -- https://amzn.to/3FQVTzo • Also in the bag: • Zoom H1n -- https://amzn.to/3DTRxpk • Zoom H4n -- https://amzn.to/3vlF1Mm
