After the conflict had come to an end in Europe, there were many trials that took place to bring the former guards of camps such as Bergen-Belsen or Ravensbruck to justice. Some were executed, and some were imprisoned. But from the survivors of Buchenwald, stories of one woman's brutality emerged and Ilse Koch's horrific acts were brought to the world after World War 2. • Ilse Koch was referred to as 'The Witch of Buchenwald,' and was the wife of the Commandant of Buchenwald, Karl-Otto Koch. The pair had previously worked at Sachsenhausen, but at Buchenwald Ilse would commit many awful crimes. She stole the money from thousands of prisoners and used this to create a sports arena, and she would also beat prisoners with her whip after patrolling on horseback. Ilse Koch also became known for taking part in selections where she sent thousands of prisoners to their deaths, and also she was accused of other shocking crimes. But after the war, she was placed on trial by the Americans who reduced her initial life sentence to 4 years imprisonment based on evidence. But there was so much outrage about this that German courts tried Ilse Koch again, and she was sentenced to life imprisonment again.
