SINGAPORE NICK LEESON TO RETURN FOR TRIAL

(30 Oct 1995) English/Nat • Officials in Singapore have welcomed the decision by Nick Leeson to return and face justice. • He's accused of 11 counts of forgery over deals which are alleged to have caused the collapse of Barings bank. • He was arrested in Germany in March after fleeing Singapore, where he worked for the British bank. • He'd been fighting extradition to Singapore - but has had a sudden change of heart. • If convicted, he faces up to 14 years in prison in Singapore. • The Singapore stock exchange has welcomed the decision by disgraced futures trader Leeson to drop his fight against extradition to the island. • Leeson's lawyer in Singapore explains his client's reasons for returning. • SOUNDBITE: • He is in a fairly positive mood before that he was just lets get on with it, you know I am what I am lets face what the issues are lets just get on and try and get everything resolved as efficiently as possible as quickly as possible one underlying phrase has always been that he has unlimited legal resources lets just concentrate on the spot where we can get this efficiently resolved - that has a lot to do with the decision • SUPERCAPTION: John Koh, Nick Leeson's lawyer in Singapore. • Leeson's lawyer gave his client's reasons for changing his mind: • After consulting my legal advisors I'm satisfied that I will be fairly tried and judged in Singapore. I wish to apologise to all Singaporeans for having doubted that I could receive a fair trial.
