At the Corteva Open Innovation Forum, June 2, 2019, in Nice, over 200 seed technology leaders joined from around the world for a highly engaged panel discussion on open innovation, moderated by Euractiv Agricultural Editor Sarantis Michalopoulos. • In this interview, Christoph Herrlinger, Management Board, NPZ, explains that to solve the toughest agricultural challenges, we need to use all tools available, especially the most modern tools like genome editing. As the current European regulation categorizes all mutagenesis as GMO, the regulation needs informed by modern science and revised to serve the public. • From the discussion and questions from the floor, to interviews and conversations afterwards, several common themes emerged which reinforced Corteva's commitment to making open innovation a priority, as we begin our journey as a pure-play agricultural company. • • We heard that climate change and extreme weather conditions are affecting farmers and producers in North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. • • We heard that farmers are under increasing pressure to produce more with less, in order to respond to the societal demand for sustainability. • • Everyone agreed that vital new technologies like gene editing will be crucial to answering all of those challenges, but that we need not only accelerated and widespread development, but also social and political acceptance, to use them effectively. • • We heard positive sentiment about the next generation embracing technology more as a way of providing critical agricultural solutions, and also taking a strong position with regulators to influence policy in this direction. • • Finally, we heard that small and large producers and research institutions are eager for open innovation partnerships, in order to ensure that farmers everywhere have the best adapted crop varieties. • Together, we can develop and deliver much-needed plant innovations wisely and responsibly, and forge a sustainable future for agriculture. • https://openinnovation.corteva.com/
