Textual Revolution The Multimodal Coup

Even before we learned to read a book, we learned to read a film. Students today traverse a hybrid semiotic field of multimodal texts. The inclusion of critical and viewing literacies in the curriculum is no longer optional for schools. These non-linguistic forms of representation necessitate an evaluation of what it means to be fully literate. The shift to multiliteracies proposed by the New London Group necessitates a fundamental revolution in our approach to language teaching. This paper proposes that the short film be used as a valuable story-telling resource that offers exciting pedagogical possibilities to introduce literary concepts and to develop communication, expression and interpretation within the time constraints of the classroom. With its narrative focus and economy, the short film provides the perfect platform for teachers to teach students about textuality and sensitize them to ideological bias and influence their values and outlook to life. The diversity of short films in terms of style, language and country of origin, also hold the potential of bringing different thematic concerns and multicultural experiences to the students. By acknowledging and representing the diversity afforded to us by the multiculturalism of a globalized world, the short film can be a conduit for imparting empathy and to discuss issues of equity and inclusion. • For more information about Multimodality SIG, please visit our website at https://multimodalitysig.wixsite.com/... or contact us at [email protected]
