At 8' 8 tall, this is an impressive mahogany tall clock. It was made circa 1810 by clockmaker Isaac Brokaw of Bridge Town, New Jersey. The intricately detailed case is attributed to cabinetmaker Matthew Egerton of New Brunswick, New Jersey. • Egerton was widely considered one of the finest woodworkers in America during the federal period. One of his signature design elements was the use of a blind-pierced fretwork that adorns the bonnets of his finest cases. This decorative feature is characterized by a clover motif in a punched-out pattern on the top half of the bonnet. This feature, combined with multiple inlay details and cross banding, creates a visually stunning case. • The bucolic dial features a warm, peaceful country home setting framed with a decorative pattern of swags, tassels, sheaves of wheat, and a sunburst. Applied gesso, highlighted with gilt, adds a three-dimensional quality to the artistry. It is signed by the maker. It reads, “Issac Brokaw - Bridge Town.” • Isaac Brokaw was born in 1746 in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey. By the time he was fourteen years old, he was apprenticing for one of New Jersey’s earliest clockmakers, Aaron Miller of Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. Within five years, he had established his own shop in Hillsborough Township, where he worked until his mid-forties. At this time, Brokaw moved and took up work in Bridge Town, New Jersey, which is now part of Rahway, leaving his eldest son John to run his shop. He built clocks in Bridge Town until he turned his clock shop over to his youngest son Aaron, also a clockmaker, in 1816. Brokaw died later on in 1826. To this day, Brokaw's tall clocks are among the most highly sought tall clocks of New Jersey origin. • Dimensions: H 104 W 21 1/2 D 10 1/2 • Inventory #219100
