*Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke* • Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are serious heat-related illnesses that can occur when the body overheats. These conditions are often caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures, especially when combined with high humidity and strenuous physical activity. • *Heat Exhaustion* • Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually through excessive sweating. It is more common in hot and humid weather. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can develop suddenly or over time and include heavy sweating, weakness, cold and clammy skin, fast and weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, tiredness, dizziness, headache, and fainting. It is crucial to act quickly when someone shows signs of heat exhaustion to prevent the condition from progressing to heatstroke. • To treat heat exhaustion, move the affected person to a cooler, air-conditioned environment or at least a shaded area. Remove any tight or unnecessary clothing and apply cool, wet cloths to the skin or have the person take a cool shower or bath. Offer sips of water or an electrolyte-containing drink, like a sports drink, but avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol. If symptoms worsen or do not improve within an hour, seek medical attention as the condition can escalate to heatstroke. • *Heatstroke* • Heatstroke is a severe medical emergency that occurs when the body’s temperature regulation system fails, and body temperature rises to 104°F (40°C) or higher. This condition can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs. Symptoms of heatstroke include a high body temperature, altered mental state or behavior (such as confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures, and coma), hot and dry skin (lack of sweating despite the heat), rapid and strong pulse, and shallow breathing. • Immediate medical attention is essential for heatstroke. Call emergency services right away. While waiting for help, move the person to a cooler environment and try to lower their body temperature by any means available. This can include immersing them in a cool bath or shower, spraying them with a garden hose, sponging them with cool water, or applying ice packs to areas with large blood vessels close to the skin, such as the armpits, groin, neck, and back. • *Prevention* • Preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke involves staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity in extreme heat, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Monitoring weather conditions and being aware of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses can also help prevent these serious conditions.
