This novel was adapted into a mini-series presented on American television in 1988. Wouk was the screenwriter as well as the author of the original book. • • The Kehlstein was closed for more than a month for filming. The original furniture and interior was moved from the Platterhof Hotel where they were kept by US forces at the time. The Kehlsteinhaus was intended as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler to serve as a retreat for Hitler and place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries. • The Kehlsteinhaus was commissioned by Martin Bormann, with construction proceeding over a 13-month period. It was completed in the summer of 1938, prior to its formal presentation to Hitler on his 50th birthday on April 20, 1939.
