He writes that while every structure is a recognizable monument to that great 'abstract and intentional city,' none is recognizable in its actual surroundings. Indeed, as depicted, the buildings have no surroundings but snow drifts and bare trees. It is as if the defenseless child of the dream, in passing into the modern, West European spaces of the capital, has entered a barren, inhuman wasteland of stone and frozen concrete...
