One thing that can be difficult to determine at first is the strumming speed, particularly when you have various chord changes within the song. The strumming speed is the number of strums you can make in one beat. And the beat, of course, is the steady, underlying pulse or groove of the song. • In this ukulele tutorial video, Jenny discusses harmonic rhythm or harmonic tempo and the effect of strumming speed to this rhythm. Sounds complex, right? So before we go further with it, it’s also helpful to remember that when we are learning a new song on the ukulele, practicing with an easy one strum per beat gives you time to get familiar with the melody and chord changes. When you’ve got the chord changes down along with singing the melody, then you can level up to more complicated strumming stuff. • In essence, harmonic rhythm is how frequent (or rare) the chords change in a song in relation to the rhythmic pulse – so a song can have a fast or slow harmonic rhythm depending on the pace on how the chords progress. Even if the harmonic rhythm does not change, you can actually vary your strumming speed and your strumming pattern. The strumming pattern is the combination of strums per beat such as one down strum plus one up strum per beat, one up strum with two down strum per beat or some other combination that works with the song you’re practicing on. • This is illustrated by Jenny in the video with different strumming styles for the song “Hush Little Baby.” First, she sings and strums with all down strums (one strum per beat) then proceeds with a down-up strumming pattern (two strums per beat). The pace by which she changes chords and sings the melody (i.e., the harmonic rhythm) does not change even though the speed and pattern of her strums do. • MORE FREE LESSONS AND TABS • http://ukulele.io/free-stuff-offer • LEARN UKULELE THE EASY WAY • http://ukulele.io/Buy21Songs • Book + 40 video lessons for one low price! • • Ukulele Strumming Tips: How to choose... - Ukulele Strumming Tips: How to choose strumming speed • To learn lots more ukulele chords, try our playlist • How to Play Ukulele Chords . • To spice up your strumming, try our playlist • Ukulele Strums • Want to learn to play the theme music from our intro?
