Watch as Parents Magazine shows when to worry about anemia! Do you know if your baby is getting enough iron? If signs of anemia are starting to show, it's time to take action. Anemia reduces the body's ability to carry oxygen, but many babies have no symptoms at all. This is why it's so important to pay close attention to any that may show. Severe cases may lead to pale, gray skin. Weakness or irritability can accompany shortness of breath or swollen hands and feet. A simple blood test between nine and twelve months of age can detect anemia in children. Premature babies, babies who breastfeed exclusively for more than four months, and those who were fed cow's milk during the first year are more susceptible. Because of its low iron content, cow's milk can make any iron your baby does get even harder to digest. When you do decide to make the switch to solid foods, make sure your baby gets plenty of meat and foods with added iron so you don't have to worry about the signs of anemia! • Subscribe to the Parents channel: http://po.st/SubscribeToParents • About Parents: We’re here to help moms and dads raise happy, healthy kids—and have A LOT of fun along the way.
