Rudolf Steiner and Today’s One-World Economy • A story told by Christopher Houghton Budd in many parts • 35 podcasts recorded for the Adam Center for Social Development ( https://www.adamlh.org.il/english ), Tiv'on Israel in June 2024. Comments (moderated by Omri Elaad) are welcome to: [email protected] • Via the medium of these thematic (video-based) podcasts, and on behalf of spiritually-minded and socially responsible people everywhere, Omri Elaad, asks economic and monetary historian, Christopher Houghton Budd (http://www.christopherhoughtonbudd.co...) why he rates Rudolf Steiner’s approach to today’s socio-economic challenges, and what in plain English he sees as Steiner’s main contribution to their understanding. Given its complexity, how can we navigate today’s world without losing individual agency, entrusting the management of events to authorities and experts, or chasing conspiracies? The idea of the series is to build bridges between Steiner and mainstream economics, between laypeople and experts, and between today’s uninformed worrying and the stability born of comprehension. • Both as an entrepreneur and an academic, Houghton Budd, has spent a life-time interpreting Rudolf Steiner’s contributions to economics. For over 50 years, he has studied Steiner’s ideas, both in terms of their theoretical merit and their relevance to practical life – even now, nearly 100 years after his death. Houghton Budd has given many workshops all over the world, testing his understanding of Steiner in different cultures and languages. His research has led him into many schools of economic thought, resulting in him writing and editing over 40 books and nearly 300 editions of a journal on ‘associative economics’ (https://aebookstore.com/publications/..., as Steiner’s work is generally called. • Alongside his mainstream work, Houghton Budd is also a founder-member and the convenor of the Economics Conference of the Goetheanum (https://economics.goetheanum.org/home) , a worldwide community of researchers in ‘associative economics’. • On behalf of the Adam Center, I would like to express our gratitude to Christopher for his agreement to extensively share his views and experience with us. - Omri Elaad • Link to Houghton Budd's written introduction to the podcast: https://www.adamlh.org.il/english/one... • Complete podcast index: • No. Time Title • The Idea of a One-World Economy • 1 18:10 Doom or Agency • 2 15:12 Orienting Oneself in Economic Space • 3 19:43 The Economy as a Living Process • 4 13:25 The Grey Time • 5 23:42 The Marshallian Detachment • Epistemological Considerations • 6 16:08 The Methodology of Associative Economics • 7 19:28 Overcoming the Limits to Knowledge • 8 16:56 Maynard Keynes and Rudolf Steiner • Rethinking Price, Labour, Land and Capital • 9 23:25 True Pricing • 10 17:49 Twin Theory of Value and (10:00) the Economics of Farming • 11 14:36 Of Goethe and Newton • 12 12:07 Labour and the Meaning of Work • 13 24:28 The Idea and Several Meanings of 'Land' (13:37 Real Estate) • 14 16:16 Self-interest, Copyright and the Commodification of Land • 15 20:04 The Economics of Real Estate (including the case of Folkestone, England) • 16 17:44 Associative Real Estate • 17 23:09 Adam Smith, Constitutional Monarchy and the Idea of a Higher Self • 18 19:35 Capital Consciousness and (10:15) Financial Literacy • 19 22:46 From Preservation to Circulation of Capital (via Accounting) • Uses, Functions and Kinds of Money • 20 15:31 The Three Uses of Money • 21 12:21 The Epistemology of Finance and the Nature of Accounting • 22 19:18 The Challenge to Business Studies • 23 21:21 Beyond Savings • 24 16:46 Of Karma and Markets (including Hayek and Keynes) • 25 19:46 Rudolf Steiner, Threefoldness and Associating • 26 20:38 Associations and Distribution • 27 25:28 Associative Working (10:34 Beyond Employment and Riven Society) • 28 16:42 Taxation • 29 13:14 Wealth Equitability and Entrepreneurial Taxation • Macro-economic Considerations for an Associative Economy • 30 24:36 Associative Financial Literacy / Deep Accounting • 31 17:59 Money as Bookkeeping / Threefold Accounting • 32 13:26 Beyond Gold / Steiner on Money • 33 28:24 Consciousness obviates Gold • 34 23:58 The Roles, Rights and Responsibilities of Share Ownership • 35 21:32 Balancing Revenue and Capital / The Purpose of Surplus Value
